HNC in Motor Vehicle Engineering Management & ONC in Motor Vehicle Engineering (York College)
My guiding principle is that we're never too old to learn so every incident brings new learning to enrich my experience and knowledge.
Prior to joining the Police Service in 1985 I gained an ONC in Motor Vehicle Engineering and a HNC in Motor Vehicle Engineering Management at York College through a full-time apprenticeship with North Yorkshire County Council. During this time, in addition to my car licence, I gained licences to drive all types of goods vehicles and motorcycles.
Police Service (1985-2011): Having joined North Yorkshire Police in 1985 I moved to the Traffic Department in 1988 (now known as Roads Policing) and subsequently to the Collision Investigation Unit in 1991. I gained qualifications in collision investigation, photography and tachograph analysis combined with other specialist courses during my service. I became Senior Collision Investigator and Unit Supervisor in 2000 and passed my promotion examination in 2006 when I also gained a BSc (Hons) in Combined Studies in Science. I qualified as a Police Class One Driver and an Advanced VIP Motorcyclist.
Joining the Police exposed me to a wide range of incidents including murder investigations and terrorist incidents but my work focussed primarily on collisions and in-depth investigations. I have investigated over 500 fatal incidents and many serious-injury cases as well as supervising those carried out by my team. During my service I shared my knowledge by providing guest lecturer services at the University of Teesside (tees.ac.uk) and delivered Roads Policing Senior Investigating Officer training with Sancus Solutions (sancussolutions.co.uk).
Independent Collision Investigator and Trainer (2011-2014): During this time I worked on my own and with training providers, delivering bespoke training and undertaking collision investigation services.
DWF LLP (2014-2021): I moved to DWF LLP (dwfgroup.com) in 2014 as their 'in-house' collision expert, gaining valuable knowledge and experience of civil procedures and the challenges encountered in some of the very high-value and sensitive cases.
I have continued my professional development over recent years, studying vehicle event data recorders, CCTV analysis, and Metrology amongst others.
